Treatment Options for Dyskinesia and Tremors
The involuntary movements in our body can be termed as dyskinesia. This particular condition can affect either just one part of the body like the arm or the leg or affect the whole body at once. Hence, it is clear that this condition has a range of intensity that goes from mild to severe and becomes painful while seriously interfering with the normal functioning of our daily lives.
There is no uniformity as such in when this condition can occur and at what frequency it would occur every day. Because of how erratic the condition is, it is necessary to understand the various treatment options of this condition. Some of the treatment options for dyskinesia and tremors are discussed herein.
Altering the levodopa dosage
Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease occur because of the reduced concentration of dopamine. Dopamine’s major function is to make sure that the limbs in our body move smoothly. When these levels go down, the individual would experience jerky movements and stiffness in the body. Levodopa is given to make sure that doesn’t happen by increasing the concentration of dopamine in the brain. As the dopamine levels reduce, its effects also wear off. This up and down fluctuations of dopamine levels could be causing the dyskinesia in the individual.
If that is the cause of dyskinesia in the body, then the level of levodopa being prescribed to the patient can be reduced. The level of levodopa should be reduced enough to prevent dyskinesia from occurring in the body but also not so much that it won’t be able to handle the lack of dopamine caused by Parkinson’s disease and becomes entirely ineffective. This adjustment of dosage should strictly be done by a medical professional.
Another option is to take levodopa in an extended-release form. The medicine would be released at a slower pace to make sure that the release of dopamine in the body also happens at a slower pace.
Amantadine
It is one of the most popular medications as a treatment option for dyskinesia and tremors in people with Parkinson’s disease. This medication is known to help in the treatment of symptoms such as stiffness and shaking. This medication comes in two forms namely Gocovri and Osmolex ER. Gocovru is in the form an extended-release capsule and the dose suggested is one capsule per night. Similar to Gocovri, Osmolex ER also comes in an extended-release form. But instead of one unit a night, it should be taken once every morning. Nausea, dizziness, and difficulty in sleeping are some of the side effects rendered because of the usage of these medications. Hence, it is important for individuals to consult their physicians before using these medicines.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
This is one of those treatment options that are capable of treating Parkinson’s symptoms such as walking problems, stiffness, and tremors, besides dyskinesia. This treatment procedure can block the abnormal nerve impulses that cause dyskinesia and other symptoms of Parkinson’s symptoms.
These options are known to help with the treatment of dyskinesia as well as other issues like tremors.
